Experiencing winter in Livigno means not only skiing on the slopes of the ski area, which will also host the Winter Olympics, but discovering the most authentic and genuine soul of the mountains. And to do so, there is nothing better than a nice combination of food and nature.

After a few months’ break from summer activities, the Alpe Vago reopened its doors, as per tradition, in the days after Christmas and will remain open until early spring. Of course, there are many differences compared to July and August: the verdant pastures and mountains all around are covered in snow, the animals do not graze in the meadows but are sheltered in the barn on our farm, and the temperatures are much lower. But inside the farmhouse the atmosphere is that of summer days: warmth, cosiness and lots of good food.

Here, in our spacious dining room or at the tables outside on sunny winter days, you will find everything you need to have an unforgettable experience in Livigno, while contemplating a dreamlike panorama: a typical lunch with local dishes, or a tasting of home-made, zero-km products. Also on the winter menu are our most popular specialities, such as the pizocar livignaschi (see what they are), polenta accompanied by delicious meats and other mountain dishes, as well as the shepherd's basket, which contains a selection of goodies made in Livigno, such as salumi and cheese, ideal for a snack or a pick-me-up to regain energy.

In the winter season, Alpe Vago is open every day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with kitchen open for lunch from 11.30 a.m. until 2 p.m..

How to reach Alpe Vago in winter

Just as in summer, the Alpe Vago alpine pasture is the ideal destination for a nature hike in Livigno, but in winter it is even more special: the alpine pasture is located in an area immersed in the tranquillity of nature, where it is not possible to arrive by car because the road in the direction of the Forcola Pass remains closed during the winter months. The only way to get to Alpe Vago is therefore by snow:

• walking with snowshoes, walking from the last bus stop in Livigno in the Forcola area (Blue and Green lines) following the beaten track;
• on skisfollowing the route of Livigno's cross-country ski track to Alpe Vago.

In both cases, a enchanting route in the valley of Livigno is followed, face to face with Alpine winter nature, shrouded in silence and offering postcard-perfect scenery.

It is already winter in Livigno! The first snow arrived in abundance and transformed our valley into a large white basin, framed by the Alpine peaks, ready to welcome skiers, winter sports enthusiasts and athletes from the Winter Olympics Milan-Cortina. But the alternatives in Livigno for non-skiers there is no shortage: our two alpine pastures, for example, Alpe Vago and Alpe Mine, in this season they are destinations for beautiful winter walks with snowshoes on your feetto walk on fresh snow and immerse yourself in nature away from the ski slopes or the busy streets of the centre. Snowshoe trail to Alpe Vago

 hike to Alpe Vago is an activity to do in Livigno both in summer (discover the route) than in winter. In the snow, you can reach the alpine pasture either on skis or snowshoes: the cross-country skiing track in Livignoabout 30 km long, does in fact reach this area, but for those who want aeasy, flat winter hike The best way is to get to Alpe Vago on snowshoes. The starting point is the last stop of the free bus in Livigno in the direction of the Forcola pass (closed in winter), at the Hotel Forcola: from here you walk along the marked trail, skirting the road in the first section and then the river Spoland then into the beautiful snowy forest in a fairytale setting. In less than an hour of easy walking you are in sight of theAlpe Vago and the eponymous hut which stands out amidst the whitewashed pastures: here, generally from February when the farm reopens, you can stop for a lunch of polenta, pizocar or others typical livigno dishes or for a substantial snack with cheese, cold cuts and other zero-kilometre delicacies from our shepherd's basket.

With snowshoes in Val delle Mine

Also the Valley of Mines is one of the most beautiful places in Livigno in any season, but the charm of the snow covering the forest makes it truly unique. La snowshoeing in Val delle Mine consists of a loop route that starts and ends in locality Tresenda, just a few metres from our farm (car park P6 in Livigno) and is easily recognisable as it is marked by the green and fuchsia bollards that distinguish the snowshoe trails in Livigno. The road largely follows thesummer excursionAt the very first fork, turn left and climb up the side of the valley, with a gentle slope punctuated by a few hairpin bends. When the track begins to descend, in a few steps you reach the halfway point of the snowshoe hike, which coincides with the most scenic and 'Instagrammable' point of experience: the Lovers' Bridge, a small, pretty wooden bridge suspended over the Tresenda stream with two carved hearts affixed to it. Crossing it leads to the second part of the route (in fact, you do not climb up to the 2200 metres of the Alpe Mine hut closed throughout the winter), which returns to its starting point via the forest pathequally scenic.

The highlight of the shepherd's basket are the cold meats, and in particular two typical cold cuts of Livigno that we produce in our own charcuterie factory at the Alpe Livigno farm, from Italian meats safely sourced and of high quality:

• two types of salami (the beef/sausage and the pure pork salami), in the classic traditional format, with a rustic and authentic flavour. A concentrate of energy and taste that helps to regain strength after the exertion of the hike;
• the pork slinziga (o slinzega), an artisan cured meat from Livigno that resembles a miniature bresaola, light but with a strong taste, perfect for snacks and aperitifs.

Among the walks and hikes that can be done in Livigno in summer - but, why not, also in spring and autumn - there is certainly one that leads to the Nera Valley waterfallsa natural attraction of great charm that can be reached by a easy and not long walkreally within everyone's reach. And that starts with theAlpe VagoLet's find out together!

How to reach the Val Nera waterfalls from Alpe Vago

The starting point for the excursion to the Nera Valley waterfalls is the Alpe Vago hutwhich can be easily reached in just ten minutes on foot from the car park P8 of Livigno (here you will find all the indications). Just past the refreshment point (we will return later, don't worry!) we find a signpost on our right with the directions to the 'Casc'chéda da Val Néira'. in Livigno dialect, but let's ignore it: this is in fact the steepest route up to the waterfalls, which we will use instead for the return journey, thus completing a loop. In fact, we need only continue for a few dozen metres to meet another fork: this time we follow the sign with the number 114which points to the right and gives the waterfalls at 40 minutes' walk.

We thus begin to walk a well-trodden path which enters the pastures of the Vago plain, climbing gently: with a quick zig-zag with two hairpin bends, the track overcomes a fair height difference and brings us to the entrance to the forest. This is the toughest point, but can be tackled by all, including children, but it lasts only a short time and practically exhausts the gradients to be overcome in a few metres (the overall height difference of the hike is about 200 metres) leaving the rest of the walk very quiet.

In fact, the path soon begins to climb much more gently, with some flat sections, on the right flank of the Val Neraoutside the forest and thus offers a very wide and pleasant panorama: looking on the opposite side of the valley we can see the road we will take on the way back, while in summer it will be easy to encounter herds of grazing cows sly.

After about 30 minutes of walking we stretch out our ears: we can already begin to hear in the distance the roar of the waterfallwhich intensifies as we get closer. When we finally see it too, it is time to descend: we do this by going down a series of steps carved into the rock, which are not difficult. Here we are at last at the point where the water of the Val di Campo stream ends its jump by throwing itself into the Val Nera streamcreating a truly majestic natural spectacle: seen from down here, the Val Nera waterfall is impressive.

Return and stop at the Alpe Vago hut

Once we have admired the waterfall, we can walk to return to Livigno. There are two solutions here: either retrace the route taken on the outward journey backwards, or descend on the opposite side of the valley, thus closing an entire loop. To cross the stream we must cross the Tibetan bridge located at the foot of the waterfall: this will be additional fun for the children in tow, who will have no fear. Afterwards, we climb back up the steps and finally arrive at a waterfall viewpointFrom here we follow the easy path that takes us back in about half an hour, descending steadily and gently to the initial crossroads near the Alpe Vago hut.

The best way to end this beautiful mountain hike in Livigno is to snacking at the refreshment bar (or a nice lunch, if we have walked in the morning: reservations are not necessary), comfortably seated at outdoor tables: we can choose a typical sweet such as strudel or a slice of tart with jam and ricotta cream, or opt for the shepherd's basket consisting of cured meats, alpine cheeses, bread and ricotta, all strictly from zero km local production. Children will also appreciate the small playground present, not to mention the opportunity to see the cows grazing nearby.

 Alpe Vago is an alpine pasture located at the far end of the long Livigno valley facing the Forcola Pass, Valposchiavo and the Bernina Pass. Around Alpe Vago there is a network of trails suitable for allhere are the most beautiful ones to walk.

Easy walk Livigno-Alpe Vago

Leaving the car at the car park P8 you can easily take the fastest way to Alpe Vago. Just to the side of the car park, just below the roadway that continues towards the Forcola, a dirt road substantially flat, appropriately signposted, which leads to the malga in less than half an hour on foot. When you reach the crossroads, ignore the track that continues straight ahead in the direction of the pass and instead turn left, crossing the stream on the wooden bridge and crossing pastures where cows graze grass in summer enjoying the crisp alpine air of Livigno: within a few steps you are in sight of the Alpe Vago hut.

It is a short walk suitable for children and familieson a dirt track that can also be used by pushchairs. Once done snack at Alpe Vago - or why not, even enjoy a good lunch - you can return by the same route or close the loop using the second route.

From Livigno to Alpe Vago: longer alternative

Anyone wishing to undertake aless short and slightly more demanding excursionbut also more beautiful from a naturalistic point of view with some passages through the forest, can start from the car park P7 of Livigno, cross the road bridge and take the dirt track that runs alongside the river SpolThis is dotted with picnic and barbecue areas. After an easy, flat first section, turn left at the fork and begin a gentle climb, passing an abandoned building. After passing a double hairpin bend, you reach the highest point of the route, again without too much effort, and enter the forest enjoying some welcome shade. Here the path, always wide and safe, continues flat and then gently sloping down to the plain where the pastures of Alpe Vagothe alpine hut and the farmhouse: the perfect place to enjoy the genuine local products in the midst of the nature of the Alps.

From Alpe Vago to the waterfalls of the Val Nera

Alpe Vago is also the starting point of theroute leading to the Val Nera waterfallsone of the most beautiful hikes to be made in Livigno in summer, without any particular difficulty and lasting approximately 2 hours return. The route is circular and can be tackled in two different directions, both of which are well signposted by the hiking signs in the vicinity of the malga. Either along the river on the left or on the opposite side, entering the Val Nera it is possible to admire the majesty of the mountains and nature up close, only to find oneself after about an hour's walk in front of the marvellous spectacle of the waterfalls thundering down the rocks. A scenic Tibetan bridge wooden walkway allows you to cross the stream and appreciate the descent of the water even more closely, before moving on to the opposite bank and closing the hiking loop: you return to Alpe Vago, for a more than well-deserved snack livignasca.
